'All-news' channels get silly at convention

While network TV viewers didn't get to see Al Gore in one of his better political speeches Monday night at the opening session of the Democratic convention, they were also spared some of the sillier coverage that ended up on the "all-news" channels.

There was rocker JOAN JETT telling Bill O'Reilly on the Fox News Channel why she's backing John Kerry.

"He walks it like he talks it," she said.

Over on MSNBC, "special correspondent" Brian Balthazar did a "funny" report about trying to crash the convention, including trying to offer a buck to a police officer to get through security.

"Since I'm not a real journalist I never told anybody I was comin', " he said in a piece complete with wacky sped-up video, silly music and a John Kerry impersonator.

It's the kind of stuff you'd expect on Comedy Central's "Daily Show."

Only on Comedy Central, it would have been funny.

Even CNN turned to Mo Rocca - the former "Daily Show" smarty pants - to fill in the gaps between the big speeches.

But the funniest line of the night came in the opening of Gore's speech.

"You know the old saying: you win some, you lose some. And then there's that little-known third category."

Hey, it was Al Gore. From him, it was funny.

But the first couple prime-time hours of the convention, before Hillary and Bill Clinton spoke in the 9 p.m. hour of network coverage, shows why the networks aren't airing more of this week's activities.

On Tuesday night, the networks aren't offering any coverage at all.
