JOAN JETT roars again
from: Star-Telegram

JOAN JETT owes me a car speaker.

Back in 1981, I blasted I Love Rock 'n' Roll until the rear of my Firebird shimmied, my Pioneer speaker popped and the type wore off the cassette. I am not alone.

Driving rock 'n' roll, gritty vocals, black leather and a sneer that would make Elvis proud -- that's why we love JOAN JETT. And we don't think for a minute that she'll water down her trademark show for family-friendly Mayfest.

Jett and the BLACKHEARTS cracked No. 1 on the Billboard charts in 1981 with I Love Rock 'n' Roll.

Before that, her all-girl rock band, The RUNAWAYS, rattled rock 'n' roll down to its good-old-boy roots and shook some people up when they saw the teen-age girls playing their own instruments, an uncommon sight in the late '70s. When the band broke up in 1979, Jett formed the BLACKHEARTS.

After being turned down by 23 record labels, she released a self-titled album in 1980. The record, which became the most successful independent album in history, was picked up by Boardwalk Records in 1981 and renamed Bad Reputation, which was also the name of one of its two hits.

That was also the year she released I Love Rock 'n' Roll, a hard-rocking anthem that put her on the top of the charts for eight weeks.

In the past two decades, her jet-black, spiky hair has given way to platinum streaks, she's made a movie with Michael J. Fox, has starred in an off-Broadway production of The Rocky Horror Show and has produced other artists' albums. But Jett herself hasn't changed much, choosing to keep her guitar thumping to rock.
