Ask Joan
from: JOAN JETT

...will you ever put out a live CD or a box set of studio and live recordings spanning your whole career?...
...Why wait for the support of a major label that doesn't seem to ever materialize?...

Hi Joan, how are you?

I love your voice and your music!

Are you planning on touring in the UK in the near future? It would be so cool to see you play!

Luv from
RockNRollStationBabe

Hey RockNRollStationBabe!

Thanks for the nice note. Its been too long since we've played the UK and I will do everything I can to make sure we get over to you soon. Also, to Europe, and around the world.

Keep Rockin

Hi Joan.

This is a great touch to the website. I've been a fan since the early 80's and would like to start by saying thank you for all the music over the years. I'm a fan of a lot of bands and artists, but the connections that were made in my teens with individuals like yourself are the ones that remain the strongest to this day. Even thou I've only seen you live once. But being up in Canada, it's somewhat expected - so no hard feelings. But your itinerary shows a Canadian date next summer so maybe I'll be lucky.

My questions are pretty simple ones;

What's the last good movie that you saw, and what are you listening to right now?

That's it, take care and Happy Holidays.

Peter
Hi ya Peter,

I'm gonna say last good movie was "Pay It Forward" on HBO, I think.

Music is tougher. I'm listening to a lot of stuff I grew up listening to from glitter rock (Sweet, Gary Glitter) Fugazi, Replacements, Social Distortion, Sleater-Kinney, and always hoping for something new to blow my mind. Oh, and "De Stijl" by the White Stripes.

Thanks for your letter.

Joan:

I just want to say you ROCK! I have been a fan of yours since you were in The RUNAWAYS. I started listening to you around 1979-80 (I'm now 39). I don't have to worry about finding your out of print CDs, because I have everything on vinyl! But, I will buy the CDs once they make it to the record store.

Anyways, this is the deal. I live in Katy, Texas, a small suburb outside of Houston. I don't think I have ever seen you and the Blackharts play a concert in Houston. If you have, I must have missed it. So, I saw on your WEB site that you are playing at the Wisconsin State Fair in Chippewa Falls, WI. Assuming the show will not be canceled between now and July '03, I plan on traveling up to see you, and visit my friend in the Eau Claire area. So, here is my question/s. I'm sure you get ask this a lot, but is there any chance of being able to meet you? Maybe get an autograph, or go backstage? I would just totally freak if this could happen, because I think you rule!

Last thing I would like to say is that I think you look great with the short blonde hair. It is totally you! And vegetarian rules! Also, it is great that you are reading fan email and answering questions.

Just a fan from Texas,
Mark

Hey mark,

Thanks for your letter. I'm tellin' ya, we've played in Texas for YEARS and Houston many times. I'm sure if you hold out a little, there will be a show that is closer to your area this year, so that's an option, but I don't wanna dissuade you from going to Wisconsin to hang with your friend. A lot of our fans travel and meet up on the road.

As far as autographs go, I stay and sign after shows quite often, and even if I don't, I still sign whenever anyone asks, so ask away!

See ya on the road! JJ*

PS: If you make special arrangements through the fan club, I'm sure we can hook you up.

To many who have asked:

We've added "Victim of Circumstance", "A Hundred Feet Away", and "Eye to Eye" to the set list, with more to come, including new ones.

JJ*

Joan,

Like others I have been a fan for years. I have never thought that you have gotten the recognition you deserve and I would love to see you have a hit song on the radio again. However for the very reason that you dont get the recognition you deserve I don't see any sort of commercial success happening for your music anytime soon. That brings me to my question.

Why wait for the support of a major label that doesn't seem to ever materialize? I do know that the fans would LOVE your music no matter if it was on a major or an indie, and knowing your love and support for indie bands like Fugazi it just seems like you would be better off in the indie community.

Love Always, RM

Dear RM,

We ARE on an Indie, and have been since the BLACKHEARTS first began.

We are on BLACKHEART RECORDS, which is an Indie, and distributed through various major labels, and also independently distributed, depending on the year and deal. but I understand your point.

We have had no problem up to recently getting new material out to our fans and the public in general.

The soundtrack to the film "The Sweet Life," in which I play a biker, will be coming out on BLACKHEART RECORDS in the spring, Indie distribution.

The new, original CD we are working on is a work that must be distributed by a force that can have a major impact. We will have something out as soon as possible.

Thanks
JJ*

Hey Joan

Wow, first off, I just have to say that this is really cool.

The truth is that I am not writing because I have some burning question that I want to ask you. I know all I need to know about who you are from your music and your concerts, and your personal life has nothing to do with me. The reason that I am writing is that I would like to thank you. I am 22 years old and a couple of years ago I started to really get into your music (I had always been a fan of some songs, but never really put it all together).

Anyway, i remember when I saw that you were playing in the city with the Donnas and the Roxy (i think that was in 2000). I was so excited, i started jumping around the hallways of my friends dorm while all these people looked at me real weird. I went to see the concert with two of my best friends, and we were just blown away. I mean I had always just sort of enjoyed going to concerts. But I would find my legs starting to hurt after a while and I would just kind of wait for it to end so that I could look back on it and remember how great it was (weird huh). This was the first time where I just didn't want it to end (the only other time that i have really ever felt that feeling was seeing Exene Cervenka's new band, The Original SINNERs, play this year).

Anyway, it was just like a really pure rock experience, and I wasn't in the 78th row, and you weren't on a stage 20 feet away from the nearest audience member. It was just in your face rock n roll, like seeing a local band at a club, but knowing the words to all the songs. And on top of it all you could command the room with just the power of your eyes. Since then I have seen you in concert probably between 8 and 10 times (in two years, that ain't half bad). And even though I have already seen the act a couple of times, (the best additions had to be long time, which is a kick ass song and the Ramones intro that you were playing for a while) I still get chills when I hear When Your A Jet lead into Bad Reputation, and I still don't want to leave when it's over.

The coolest part is that every time I see you the audience is different. I saw you at the Stone Pony twice with the die hard Jersey crowd, Rye Playland with little kids sitting on their parent's shoulders mouthing the words to "I Love Rock n Roll", and I even went to Rock the Park, where I was able to sit next to a bunch of mullet laden Tesla fans.

Anyway, I was able to get into you at a time when rock n roll did not seem like it was going to ever going to be good again. And you know what, as long as you are around, it will always be great (that was cheesy, but it's true). So anyway, I just wanted to thank you for being the best concert that I have ever seen. I hope that you never stop touring. And also for being the first woman rocker to play Afghanistan, because in a world that seems kind of scary right now, that is such a symbol of progress.

I also want to thank you for having an amazing staff at BLACKHEART RECORDS. We did a telethon in honor of a student at our school who was killed by another student. [We were] able to make a good thing come out of something bad (we raised money for a scholarship for incoming film students). You might have heard about the tragedy, it was a very big story. Anyway, I got in touch with BLACKHEART RECORDS and they were an extraordinary help. We were able to raise over 7000 dollars in total. Which was amazing since we were worried that nobody was going to call in.

Alright, well have written too much already. You probably stopped reading a long time ago. But I did want to thank you, but I'm probably too shy to ever do it in person.

I will ask a question, just in case you want to answer it :) - Will you ever play a song from the Evil Stig album in concert? You sound so great on that album, I would love to hear you sing one of the songs live. My friend Jaclyn always plays something off of it when she dj's.

Alright, well thanks for reading this. I would love to know that you actually did read this, buti understand that alot of people have probably e-mailed you and told you how great you are.

Thanks for being such a purely wonderful person,
Geri

Dear Geri,

I read the whole thing! Thanks so much for your very sweet words.

Keep Rockin'

I've been a fan of yours since Bad Reputation you're the greatest! My question is will you ever put out a live CD or a box set of studio and live recordings spanning your whole career?

Rich

Dear Rich,

Someday we will!!!

JJ*

Dear Joan,

This isn't as much a question as it is a response. The website for all practical purposes is the only link that someone like me in south Georgia has in keeping up with her most favorite musician, and it is great. The message board however leaves something to be desired. It kind of freaks me out how obsessive some of these folks are. To be so demanding about your creativity and music to the point of ranting about when and what songs are released...geez. I tried posting once a while back and I learned my lesson quick.

I am just thankful for you. Your music. In your own time.

I reckon I just wanted to say thanks for being there for me all these years. Your music has inspired me, comforted me, and is the best anger management any therapist could prescribed. Thank you.

Sincerely,
Jo Ann

Dear Jo Ann,

I really appreciate your thoughts.

Rock on

Hey Joan,

Are you ever going to let your hair go back to black? You are sexy either way but whoooooooooooooooohooooo when you go black.

JustACurious Long Time Fan,
Aaron

Dear Aaron,

Thanks, for the compliment!

My hair is naturally dark, so I'm not sure I want or need to do that "jett black" hair anymore. I've had it red, orange, and more recently, bald, back to dark, (when I let it grow back in), blonde, and at this exact second, its dark, with blue and purple in it.

So you'll just have to check from time to time, cause I don't know, day to day.

Keep rockin' !

Howdy!

First of all I want to say thanks for the great music and great shows over the years. I would like some new music but I know that will come when the time is right. There has been some negative feedback on the message board as of late, which is probably why this feature was deemed necessary. I don't feel that the handful of people with negative feelings or thoughts on the message board accurately reflect the overall fanbase. Don't let the feeling of a few control the destiny of the masses!

Now for a quick question: I have met you several times and have had items signed by you. I noticed when you sign and in other activities you are left-handed. Why do you play guitar right-handed? I know many left-handed people play guitar right-handed but most do not. Was it easier to learn this way or did you make a conscious decision to play this way or did it feel more comfortable playing this way? Just wondering!

A longtime fan in Texas.
Dan

Dear Dan,

I get asked about the guitar playing a lot.

When I got my guitar, it was for Christmas, and I was 13. I was aware of guitar players like Jimi hendrix, so initially, I flipped my guitar to play "lefty." But it was wrong, just wrong, for me. In my logical little brain I thought, "I need the coordination in my left hand, on the fret board, and I just strum with my right." So I flipped it back to "right-handed," although I sincerely believe that I AM playing left-handed, and all the righties had to learn the hard way!!!

Thanks and rock on!
