Fashion Week post 9-11: Designers downsize so the shows can go on

NEW YORK - What a difference a year makes. Those attending Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week here last February would have found the tents in Bryant Park packed with guests and shaking from morning to night with the throbbing music of designer fashion shows.

But for the fall 2002 women's collections, which began Sunday and winds up today, only about four shows a day were held at the park. For the rest, buyers and press got bused to the Puck Building in SoHo, where designers could lease smaller spaces for lower rents, or they were left to scatter all across the city to designer showrooms, restaurants, even an armory. Confusion was such that fashion writers complained of invitations that arrived late or not at all and scarce seating assignments.
