Review: JJ & the BH at Nassau Coliseum, 10/13/01
from: Kathleen Warnock

What had started as a rather overcast day got a bit brighter, and was lovely for October. We found the Coliseum, and circled the massive parking lot, and as we came around the building, saw a small portable stage at the end of the plaza entrance, and got a spot just on the other side of it.

There were already at least 1,000 fans there, some camped out next to their cars, tailgating in full swing. There were barbecues and impromptu street hockey games, and almost everyone was wearing a big Islanders shirt. Hockey is not my forte, but I could appreciate the good mood of a crowd of fans coming to see their team for the first time this season, said team with a 4-0 record.

You could pick out the Jettheads right away: they were the women in black, and the only guys in shirts that didn't say "Islanders" on them. We were considerably outnumbered!

However, it was a Long Island crowd, and a lot of people moved closer when the opening act came on, Randy Jackson, formerly of the band Zebra. A lot of people even sang along with the tunes. Jackson led off with a pretty respectable version of the Star Spangled Banner (which a LOT of people are adding to their repertoire these days, and through sheer practice getting better at it).

With almost no time beteween acts, they announced Joan and they took the stage at a run. With only an hour to fit the set in, they managed to get most of it in there, with not a lot of banter.

Here's the set list:
Bad Rep
Cherry Bomb
Light of Day
Do You Wanna Touch Me
Long Time
Love is Pain
MTM
Fetish
Dog
Crimson & Clover
Hate Myself

They pushed through the songs, with Joan acknowledging the Islanders and their record; then a fan (both Joan and Islanders, I guess) pushed his way up tothe front of the stage with a homemade replica of the Stanley Cup. He rested it on the stage, and then poured a can of beer into the bowl. At the conclusion of the song, Joan said: Well look at that...it's the Stanley Cup, isn't it? Well I'll have to call my official beer-taster over here. SEAN!

And the Blackheart bass player (who now has a purple streak in the front of his old-style Joan 'do) made his way over to it, and picked it up and drank from the faux-Cup. Then he dragged it over to the side, and Joan said: Thanks a lot, we'll TREASURE it! No, I MEAN it...I'm not joshin' ya!

She seemed highly amused by the whole thing and then said: Okay, here's a song you can sing along to...you probably know the words. And someone yelled I LOVE ROCK AND ROLL. And she said no, not THAT one...and went into MTM.

It was a short show, and by the end of it, the people in the Islanders shirts were edging away as the doors were about to open. No encore, even, but they'd packed a lot of playing into 62 minutes.
