JOAN JETT Doesn't Follow Rules
from: abqjournal.com

It's likely that many consider Madonna to be the ultimate pop culture pinup girl. After all, the Material Girl has conquered the music world both as a performer and as owner of Maverick Recording Company, and has dabbled in acting to boot. But even as Madonna was seeing the success of her earliest hit singles, JOAN JETT was already out there with her trademark sneer, all-leather wardrobe and punkish attitude, which helped propel "the girl Elvis" into stardom and arguably paved the way for other female icons, such as Madonna, to follow.

"I grew up in a world that told girls they couldn't play rock 'n' roll," Jett explains on her official Web site. "My parents taught me I could be anything in the world I wanted to be. That made me confused. I figured out it was a social thing, what women were allowed to do. At a very young age, I decided I was not going to follow women's rules." Jett formed the all-female group The RUNAWAYS in 1977 while barely in her teens, and the band saw limited success stateside, but had an immediate following overseas. When her first solo album was refused by 23 record companies, she formed BLACKHEART RECORDS to distribute it. Boardwalk Records finally gave Jett a chance and released her first album, titled "Bad Reputation."

In 1981, Jett formed her backing band, The BLACKHEARTS, and together they scored their first No. 1 hit, "I Love Rock 'n' Roll." It stayed on top of the Billboard charts for eight weeks. Other hits would follow, including her retooling of the Tommy James and the Shondells' classic, "Crimson and Clover." In 1987, Jett starred with Michael J. Fox in "Light of Day," a movie that earned her accolades.

In November, Jett appeared in her first Broadway production, "The Rocky Horror Show," a take on the cult movie, as a rocker named Columbia. According to Jett's publicist, Elliott Saltzman, the three-week preview to the actual production was completely sold out, a Broadway first.

Jett is now about music again, with her current tour coming on the heels of her eight-month stint on Broadway. She has a newly found enthusiasm, according to Saltzman, and has her ever present rock 'n' roll posture in tow. "I think I was born strong-willed," explained Jett on her Web site. "That's not the kind of thing you can learn. The advantage is, you stick to what you believe in and rarely get pushed out of what you want to do."
