File This Under Rock History

For those of you that couldn't be at the JOAN JETT AND THE BLACKHEARTS August 18th Sun Theater Show in Anaheim, rock history was made when, after 24 years, Joan & Cherie shared the stage for a kick-ass rendition of the RUNAWAYS signature song Cherry Bomb.

After a blazing set Joan returned for her encore (a reworking of Science Fiction from Rocky Horror) followed by the "special event" everyone had been waiting for. No one could believe their ears as she announced, "I'd like to invite a very special old and dear friend to help out on this song, we used to be in a band together called The RUNAWAYS - Cherie Currie."

Dressed in Black (and not her trademark corset) Cherie bounded onto the stage to thunderous applause as the BLACKHEARTS launched into Cherry Bomb. Interestingly Joan stepped back to let Cherie sing lead on most of the song, with the two providing the Ch... Ch... Ch... Ch... Ch... Cherry Bombs! And ended as a tag team on the last verse.

The girls proved that after 24 years "when you got it - you always got it," and kicked serious ass. Judging by the huge grin on Joan's face throughout the entire song - she was having a blast watching pal Cherie strut her stuff, as only she can.

During rehearsals, Joan reportedly had admitted to trying to remember some of the old routine they had worked out on stage together in 1977. And marveled at how relaxed Cherie was. But who had time for nerves? Certainly not Cherie, bumping, grinding, high kicking and hair throwing her way through the song, while playing up to Joan. "Hey street girl..." never sounded so good. Cherry Bomb has always been a great rock song, but at this moment I'm sure the crowd had wished it were a great rock opera. Three minutes of this event was simply not enough.

With the song done Joan and Cherie bought the house down with an emotional embrace and kiss before going their separate ways off stage - I'm sure to re-unite backstage for much backslapping and congratulations.

As the crowd-dispersed bewilderment best summed up the expression on most fans faces - did that really just happen? Pinch yourselves guys and gals, it did. You were just privy to rock 'n roll history in the making. Especially when you consider Joan has not shared the stage with a Runaway since the bands demise in 1979.

Could this performance lead to the much-talked about RUNAWAYS reunion? With Sandy West also spotted rocking out at the Sun theater, who knows and only time will tell. But if this re-teaming was any indication you can be sure of one thing - 25 years after they hit the scene these girls are sill the Queens of Noise.

And in related news....
BR Sandy West also received a great honor that evening when the BLACKHEARTS presented Sandy with her very own Platinum Record, commemorating over a million sales of their album, "Up Your Alley"!
