JOAN JETT AND THE BLACKHEARTS

"Everybody always says that their new album is the best thing they've ever done. I really believe this is the best one we've ever done. I love every song and every note on this album."

More than a decade ago, Joan Jett embarked on the path which led to NOTORIOUS, the new album by JOAN JETT & THE BLACKHEARTS on Blackheart /Epic Associated Records. Notorious features ten brand new songs written or co-written by Joan Jett including "Backlash," co-written and performed with Paul Westerberg.

"I think Tommy Price [drums] and Ricky Byrd [guitar] really played their asses off," says Joan. "The Blackhearts did everything exactly the way it was called for in each song without even thinking about it. We did it all ourselves--all the background vocals, all the music except for The Uptown Horns -- and I'm really proud of it."

Joan's career began in Los Angeles in 1975 with the groundbreaking all-girl band, The Runaways. Over the course of nine albums and several world tours, The Runaways forever changed male/female stereotypes in rock and roll.

The Runaways disbanded in 1978, but within two years Joan Jett re-emerged with her first solo album, Bad Reputation. Since then, she's never ceased to deliver the kinds of albums and performances which caused the Philadelphia Inquirer to call her "the toughest, grittiest, hardest-working woman in rock and roll." That hard work paid off in 1981 with the formation of Joan Jett & the Blackhearts and the release of I Love Rock And Roll. This multi-platinum album disc spun off a double platinum title single (Number One for eight straight weeks) and a Top Ten follow-up, "Crimson And Clover." Seven more albums followed, including 1984's Glorious Results Of A Misspent Youth ("devastating hard rock, as unrepentant as its title," wrote Dave Marsh) and the platinum Up Your Alley (1988) with its Grammy-nominated Top Ten anthem "I Hate Myself For Loving You."

Joan Jett co-starred with Michael J. Fox in Paul Schrader's 1987 film Light Of Day. Joan's screen debut earned critical accolades, including a Time review that called her "terrific...With her melodramatic dark eyes and mesmerizing surliness, Jett has the attitude and gives the performance. Try watching someone else when she is on screen. Can't be done." In between takes, Joan recorded the film's title song, "Light Of Day," written by Bruce Springsteen.

Joan Jett & the Blackhearts' innumerable tours have carried them to the world's most improbable concert locations, including a remote jungle site in the Dominican Republic. They were the first American act of any kind to perform in then-communist East Germany, and the first English-speaking rock band to play in Panama, Lapland, and Kuala Lumpur. In March, 1989, Joan Jett & the Blackhearts capped months of relentless touring with five sold-out nights on Broadway at the famed Lunt-Fontaine Theater.

After more than ten years as professional musicians, Joan Jett & the Blackhearts remain true believers in the rock and roll subculture and still adhere to the ethics upon which the music was built. In the words of "Backlash," Joan Jett & the Blackhearts have "never strayed from a course that someone else laid" and remain uncompromisingly committed to their vision of pure rock and roll.
