What were you good at in school? I was good at everything but Math. I really liked science and reading. I also enjoyed writing very much.
What did you want to be as a kid? The first thing I wanted to be was an astronaut, then a jockey and after that scientist. When I got a little older, I wanted to be in show business. At first I wanted to be an actress and later it turned into music.
When did you become interested in music? I've always loved music ever since I was a little kid. When I was 8 years old I started thinking about being an actress because I wanted to do something where people knew who I was. I got turned on to music because there was something about the way it touched me. Listening to the guitar really took over and made me feel great. I had the desire to play the instrument and that's what made me want to do this.

Was your family musically inclined? Neither of my parents played an instrument. Both enjoyed music, but that was about the extent of it.
What kind of musical training do you have? I had three guitar lessons and thousands of hours with a record player.
What instruments do you play? Guitar and bass guitar.
Who were your early influences? Early Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Humble Pie, Grand Funk, T. Rex, David Bowie, The Sex Pistols and Punk Rock.
What band would you have most wanted to join as a kid? I never fantasized about being in any other band. I've always wanted to have my own group.
First concert you attended? Black Sabbath with Blue Oyster Cult and Black Oak Arkansas.
First original song you ever wrote? It was a song called "You Drive Me Wild." It appeared on the first Runaways' album.
What type music do you enjoy listening to? I listen to a lot of Rolling Stones and The Who. I also like the glitter stuff that I grew up with; David Bowie, T Rex and Gary Glitter. I like all the punk rock stuff that I was influenced by like The Sex Pistols and various other English bands. I'm fond of The Replacements and a new band out of Los Angeles called Social Distortion. That's really only naming a few, I'm sure I'm leaving some out.
Any type of music you dislike? Yeah, house music. Most things I can deal with because there are good songs and bad songs on just about every album. It doesn't really matter what style of music it is. There's a lot of great pop, classical, rhythm and blues, and jazz songs that I really like.
Favorite albums? Let It Bleed by The Rolling Stones, Social Distortion, Let It Be by The Replacements and Never Mind The Bollocks by The Sex Pistols. It's real hard to narrow it down because I like so many different things.
Favorite Joan Jett & The Blackhearts' song? Every song represents a different part of my life and it's really difficult to say one is more important than another. Each is equally important in their own way. Obviously I prefer the songs in the live set, but there are ones not in the set that I love and think are great.
Favorite Joan Jett & The Blackhearts video? "The French Song" because it's so weird, plus I really like that song. The video for "I Love Rock 'n' Roll" is great because it was the beginning of all this stuff.
What is your history as a musician? The Runaways were my first band. They lasted from 1975 to 1979. They were the first group of musicians that I had played with.
What led you to form Joan Jett & The Blackhearts? I wanted to continue to play music but I didn't want to form another all girl band. It's hard being a girl in music, so I figured I'd even up my chances.
Where and when was your first public appearance? In September 1975 with The Runaways. We played a house keg party in California. We just set up in the living room and performed. It scared me to death because it was my first time playing in front of people. The very next night we appeared at the Whisky.
What kinds of odd jobs did you have before you could support yourself as a musician? I only had one when I lived in Maryland. I worked in a cafeteria putting food on people's trays. I was the vegetable lady.
What is your most prized possession? My guitars.
What do you like to do for recreation or relaxation? Listening to music is probably my most accessible thing. The perfect thing for me would be going away to a deserted island. I like to watch baseball games and play catch when I get a chance. I also like to read.
Most terrifying experience? Being arrested the first time The Runaways went to England. We wanted to keep our hotel room keys as souvenirs to bring back home. While we were crossing the border a guy stopped us and threw us all in jail for theft. I was pretty scared because I didn't know what would happen. They were going to send me to a women's prison and I didn't want to go there.
Happiest experience? That was when "I Love Rock 'n' Roll" broke through. You always have people who don't like you, but then, it was at its peak. That was right after The Runaways. With The Runaways I could deal with it because there were four girls in the band who had to handle it and we could comfort each other. It just really got intense when "I Love Rock 'n' Roll" was happening because people didn't think much about The Blackhearts. We thought a lot about ourselves and we went out on the road and we established our own crowd. We were real proud of that. When "I Love Rock 'n' Roll" broke through it was the ultimate fuck you. I was really able to smile and feel that it was happening.
What is your unrealized ambition? There are a lot of things I want to do. I'd always like to work with people whether it's in music or not.
If you weren't a musician what would you be? Who knows? Maybe I'd be doing what I wanted to be as a little kid. I guess I'd be up there in one of those spaceships.
